Oktoberfest Cancelled Due To Coronavirus

As of Tuesday, the 21st of April Oktoberfest has been cancelled due to concerns around COVID-19, making the world’s biggest beer fest yet another coronavirus casualty. Stoke has opened up bookings for Oktoberfest 2021 and Springfest 2021, with risk-free €1 bookings. We will travel again!

Germany’s Oktoberfest is cancelled

The mayor of Munich and Bavarian chancellor officially cancelled Oktoberfest in 2020, citing public health concerns due to the coronavirus. With no end to the crisis in sight, and with large crowds of people from all over the world being one of the main sources of potential outbreaks, the authorities in Germany, Bavaria and Munich have made the right decision, no matter how disappointing it may be.

The event attracts more than seven million beer lovers every year, with 8000 of them staying with Stoke Travel. They drink seven million litres of beer (a stat we’ve never found impressive as we get through 30,000 litres at our campsite alone), and inject more than €1 billion into the economy. Cancelling Oktoberfest doesn’t come lightly, and the effects will be felt across Munich and the world, including by your pals here at Stoke – it is by far our biggest event of the year!

What now for StOketoberfest?

Now we look towards 2021, both for Oktoberfest and Springfest. With most of our 2020 events put on pause we’re looking forward to making 2021 our biggest year yet. We had such huge plans for our 2020 season, and like every year were looking forward to ending it with a big beer-soaked bang in Munich. It makes us sad to think about the Wheel of Misfortune going unspun this year, about the campground being left bereft of live music and DJ beats, without the sloppy, happy messes stumbling around having a whale of a time.

What about my Oktoberfest booking?

We will be offering all bookings a fully transferable credit to be used at any time in the next two years, meaning that you can just change your booking to Oktoberfest 2021, or to Springfest 2021, or to the San Sebastian Surf House this summer – or to any of our events until the end of 2022 – or just leave it as credit until you know what you want to/are able to do. Or, if you can’t make it to any events over the next two-and-a-bit years you can transfer the credit to a friend, family member or frenemy.

Has Oktoberfest been cancelled before?

It sure has! Oktoberfest was last cancelled for World War 2, before that during World War 1, a bunch of times during other wars against Napoleon, and also due to cholera outbreaks. There is precedent for this, but it is the first time the event has been cancelled in modern Germany’s history, so you know that this decision hasn’t been made lightly. As much as it pains us, we know it’s for the greater good, and we will now look towards 2021 with plans to make it the biggest Oktoberfest, and Stoketoberfest, ever!
