Clowns of the Rolling Circus: Part II

The second installment in our Clowns of the Rolling Circus series. Did we save the best ’til last? Read on to find out… (Alternatively, join them on Europe’s most funnest bus tour!)

    (pseudo)-Reuben

    reuben-selfies

Magician, overlord, stand-up comedian and tour guide, Reuben is one of the Circus’ major attractions and thus much too busy to talk to us. The best we could do was use Tinder to find and interview someone with a relatively similar name (who also happens to be an ex-Stokie, wow mind blown). Readers, meet Robert.

What do you bring to the Rolling Circus?

It’s always funny when Stokies match, lol. Oh I was on the Circus last year, I’m not with them anymore. I was a videographer. I work for an American company now. I also filmed San Vino, Bulls and Tomatina.

What is your favourite thing about Stoke’s Rolling Circus?

    That it’s crazy, hahaha.

Which of the other staff members do you secretly lust after?

    Probably the office cactus, Ramona.

    What is your spirit animal?

    Freddy Mercury’s sex drive.

What is your favourite destination on the Circus itinerary/which one are you looking forward to the most?

I mean, the bus is pretty bitchin.

What is the craziest thing that has happened to you/that you have done abroad?

What, is this Reuben’s survey? Actually it sounds like Jim’s. Either way, I’m pleading the hell out of the Fifth.

No! Just curious, you sound like you’ve traveled a lot. What’s “the Fifth” mean?

Well I’ve been all over Spain with them. The Fifth Amendment in the US means you don’t have to give testimony that could incriminate you, hahaha. And the answer is Prague.

    Toni aka Chelsea Sugar

    chelsea-sugar

If you thought Fergi was g-l-a-m-etc., you should meet our girl Toni – stage name Chelsea Sugar. Contortionist, burlesque dancer and Dark Starr Inked Models Pageant finalist, Chelsea is like the rose between a whole lotta thorns (no offense Reuben, Rubics and Mr Suntan). Get along to a Rolling Circus show and watch her werk it like Rihanna.

What do you bring to the Rolling Circus?

I’m a contortionist. I bring a bit of a circus act I guess, we have Reuben who’s a magician and then the band, so I like to think I tie the two acts in together.

What is your favourite thing about Stoke’s Rolling Circus?

My favourite thing is probably the bond that we all form on the road. Definitely by the time we get to Oktoberfest we’re more of a family than we are a circus. That’s probably my favourite thing.

Which of the other staff members do you secretly lust after?

I think it’s no secret that I’ve got a bit of a thing for long hair, so I think Zel’s a total babe, I think Brendon’s really hot, and Mitch and Dean are pretty cute.

    What is your spirit animal?

My spirit animal… um… a sloth. No, probably a wolf. The wolf is my favourite animal, and I do a bit of a solo act… I dunno, I guess I just really like them. Does that make sense?

What is your favourite destination on the Circus itinerary/which one are you looking forward to the most?

Last year I really loved Budapest, because I had the best time in Budapest, but I think that this year I really fell in love with San Sebastian. The food and atmosphere was probably my favourite.

What is the craziest thing that has happened to you/that you have done abroad?

I think it was probably yesterday actually, at Disneyland in Paris. I lost a game of odds and I had to steal something from Disneyland, and so I stole a pair of Mickey Mouse ears.

    Emily and Mitch

    em2

Promoters, tent masters and all-round nice people. Emily can probably skull a pint faster than you, and Mitch once volunteered in Ecuador (#catch). We interviewed them as a duo because banter.

What do you bring to The Rolling Circus?

M: I bring a lot of good times. Shit. I dunno.

E: I bring a lot of weird facts about tapeworms.

M: I was actually a lifeguard in the United States of America for two years… Why are you doing this while we’re drunk?

What is your favourite thing about Stoke’s Rolling Circus?

M: Free sangria and beer. I love getting drunk for free.

E: We get to go around Europe, and see all the places we haven’t seen. And I’m so excited because I haven’t seen them, and…

M: I think I’ve had fuckin’ five bottles of sidra tonight [Spanish cider], and I’m fucking shitfaced.

Which of the other staff members do you secretly lust after?

    M: All of  them.

Anyone in particular? Is it Reuben?mitch2

M: Of course it’s Reuben. Everyone wants to shag Reuben.

E: Shakes head. This is not gonna be good.

    What is your spirit animal?

    M: Wolf.

E: I’d be a, um. Well, I wouldn’t like to be this, but there’s a type of butterfly, and the females they survive, the males they don’t –

M: Males always die! In the animal kingdom…

What is your favourite destination on the Circus itinerary/which one are you looking forward to the most?

    E: San Sebastian! And Zarautz.

M: I’ve already been to San Sebastian and Zarautz, quite a few times. I’m really excited for Berlin, just for like the John Lennon Wall [edit: Mitch means the Berlin Wall], and all the history between the East and Western sides of Germany. Like the Soviet and the Western part of Europe. Everything to do with the history – there’s just such a contrast between the socio-economic status of the East and West.

Have you been to Berlin before?

M: No, no I haven’t, that’s why I’m so excited. Because I know that East Berlin is gonna be a lot poorer and West Berlin is gonna be a lot richer just because of everything that’s happened in the last two World Wars.

E: Yeah, apart from San Seb, cos that’s my favourite place, Budapest because… I dunno.

What is the craziest thing that has happened to you/ that you have done abroad?

M: I think the stupidest-slash-craziest thing I did was volunteering in the Amazon in Ecuador and we went down these rapids in these tubes, and we were drinking. Like, we’d been getting fucked up that day, and we come down and this Ecuadorian guy said, “Make sure you paddle really hard with your back arms.” [back arms?]. So we all did, except for this one girl, she was from Ballarat in Australia, and she’d been sucked under this sort of waterfall, like, under-chasm and rocks. Well, lucky there was a guy in a canoe who could pull her out, but if that wasn’t so it would’ve been a really bad sort of event for our volunteer trip to South America.

E: I drank Jordan’s sick. Because it was odds, and it was danger odds. But I’ve got a strong stomach, so I won danger odds.

    Dean

    dean

Festival crew, promoter and Mitch’s adoptive younger brother. It might be his love of sidra, but this little ray of Australian sunshine is easily the most chipper member of the Circus crew. You’ll hear him heckling Reuben from the front of the bus and cracking funnies for the gals.

What do you bring to the Rolling Circus?

    Um, sidra!

What is your favourite thing about Stoke’s Rolling Circus?

    The people.

Which of the other staff members do you secretly lust after?

    Jono’s pretty, pretty good lookin’.

    What is your spirit animal?

Um… an orangutan. They act just like me. They’re lazy, they fuckin’ just wander around. Splays arms and begins orangutan impression.

What is your favourite destination on The Circus itinerary/which one are you looking forward to the most?

I’m looking forward to a lot of them. I love San Seb, it’s one of my favourite cities in the world. I’m also really excited for Moliets, to get some surf.

What is the craziest thing that has happened to you/that you have done abroad?

Probably Bulls, Running with the Bulls. That was probably the most terrifying, craziest, stupidest thing I’ve done so far. I nearly rolled my ankle, well I did roll my ankle. I was running, and it goes into a bottleneck when it goes into the arena, and there was a pile of people on the left hand side. I was running and I was looking at them, then I’ve tripped, grabbed the guy in front of me for dear life and reefed myself up, my ankle rolled so badly but I had so much adrenaline I didn’t feel it until I after I got out of the arena. I just couldn’t walk on it. Then I started feeling sick I was in so much pain, but when it happened I couldn’t feel it, the adrenaline just kicked in.

What would you say to anyone watching this who’s thinking about jumping on The Rolling Circus?

It’ll probably be one of the best decisions you’ll make. Best decision you’ll make this summer.
