Oktoberfest season and all of it’s lederhosen-clad liver swelling antics are almost upon us! And while we’re wrapt at the prospect of prosting in the beer halls again, the unreasonable…
As melhores coisas para fazer em Munique (além da Oktoberfest)
You are going to Oktoberfest, of course you are, who isn’t? It’s the best festival Germany has on offer. Heck, it’s the best festival that Europe has on offer. However, drinking beer non-stop for over a week can be a little exhausting (that’s right, even us tough Stokies need to recuperate once in awhile). So for that reason, we have rounded up what awesome day trips you can do and what other things to do in Munich to take a breather from the beer halls.
Visit the Frauenkirche, the city’s famous cathedral
Although it sounds like the last name of a famous German actor, this cathedral is one the country’s most treasured piece of architecture and definitely worth a visit whilst in Munich. And if you like being scared, you’re in for a treat, as the basement is full of crypts, and The Devil himself supposedly left a footprint at the entrance when leaving the cathedral for the first time.
Carved into this beautiful mountain is a natural toboggan track which snakes from top to bottom. Be sure not to go too fast and slide off of the track, as that would be painful… But also don’t go too slow, otherwise people will bump into you. And while you are at Blomberg Mountain, we highly recommend doing one of the hike tours as the views are breathtaking, or for the lazier among us, there is always a lift up to the top.
Take a tour of Dachau
Only a short train ride away from Munich you will find Dachau, a concentration camp from the Second World War. It is extremely harrowing to see how prisoners were kept here not even 100 years ago, but a trip worth taking nonetheless. Your idea about the holocaust will change dramatically after seeing and experiencing Dachau.
Explore the Olympic Stadium
The Olympic Stadium based at the Olympia Park in Munich is not interesting for it’s beautiful architecture. There is a reason the Germans decided to build the Allianz Arena and make that the home for Bayern Munchen. But before hundreds and thousands of football clubs came to the Olympic stadium to compete against Bayern Munchen! However, nowadays it also hosts major international sporting and entertainment events, and hopefully also the Olympic games of 2018. Credits for the picture: archdaily.com
Animal feeding in the Munich Zoo
Although you will see many animal-like creatures at Oktoberfest after they’ve had a few beers, visiting the Munich Zoo is always a fun filled experience. You can point out which animals look most like your friends, make monkey noises, and have a giraffe. You can even try to touch the animals, but we take no responsibility for the consequences!
Wave riding at the Munich wave
Even though there is no sea to be found anywhere near Munich, the city hosts one of the most visited surf spots in Europe! With a standing wave, the Eisbach river is one of the most important river surf spots in the world. But the water is cold, always 15 degrees Celsius, so no need to bring your bikini! Enjoy the Allianz Arena
Whether you want to experience a soccer game, check out one of your favourite artists, watch an incredible night light display, or to check out the iconic architecture, we highly recommend visiting the Allianz Arena when in Munich.
Become the sleeping beauty
We’ve all had that childhood Disney dream of becoming a fairytale princess or prince when we were younger. Or maybe a bad-ass knight in shining armour or dragon was more your vibe. Either way, visit the Neuschwanstein Castle which inspired Walt Disney himself and experience a fantasy world like no other. Neuschwanstein was the inspiration for the Sleeping Beauty castle, and therefore totally worth the journey from Munich. Don’t forget to bring your camera and gown. This are all fun and Stokie things to do in Munich besides Oktoberfest, and we hope you find the time to try them all. Or come back next year to do the rest, because there are so many things to do in Munich!
