Because of the limited capacity for Royal Ascot 2021 the organisers had space for members only, and thus turfed us peasants out. Luckily the Royal Windsor races are on the next weekend, and not only do they want us there, but they are giving us our own enclosure right on the finishing line.
This is the first real post-lockdown get together for the Aussie and Kiwi communities, so let’s get amongst it and really make a day of it.
When Royal Ascot wouldn’t have us we were disappointed for about three seconds. Then we started calling around and seeing who would have us, for what is Spring without a race meet? Somewhere we can get frocked up, and likely fucked up, have a punt and a prosecco, carry on like silly gooses, have a boogie and then make our way to the afterparty with our shoes in our hands and pockets full of winnings?
Royal Windsor came through with the goods, and have given us our own enclosure! Right there on the finish line, so we can really scrutinise whose nose was in front. We’ll be there for Gentleman’s Day, the first day of the Royal Windsor Festival of Racing. In our private area we’ll have music and our own electronic booking system, a private bar and plenty of space for activities – which we’ll be running all day between races.

Stoke Travel’s Day At The Races
The Stoke Travel Day At The Races is our own event, where we combine a traditional race meet – like Royal Ascot – with having as much fun as is physically possible (and then a little more) – like the London Big Day Out. Let’s call this the best of both worlds.
The experience includes your racetrack entry and private enclosure ticket, return red double-decker bus from London, picnic pack for the event, a bottle of bubbles for the races, free entry to our after party and an awesome crew who love to party with you!
We just refuse to let spring end and summer begin without having a Day At The Races, and so it only makes sense that we will organise our own and invite the extended antipodean community across London to join in the fun. This is like a regular race meet – where we get dressed up and pretend we know what we’re talking about when it comes to betting – but with the added bonus that it’s OUR race meet, so we can party and carry on like WE want to. And you better believe that we want to go out of our way to make a real day out of it.
So here are the rules of the day. First is to dress to impress, you know what we’re talking about. Make yourselves race meet ready, fancy, formal, but with flashes of fun. We’ll be doing fashions on the field, with big prizes for the best dressed. When we meet we’re going to load you up with a picnic pack and a bottle of prosecco to get the day going, and board a red double decker bus to ferry us out to Windsor. Lovely drive, if not a little wild from us lot carrying on like donkeys.
When we arrive we’ll make our way to our private enclosure where the party really gets going. We’ll be betting, drinking, eating, dancing. There will be a DJ, and competitions – think thong throwing and the like – and we’ll spend the day just being bloody lovely and having a grand old time.
When it’s done, and we’re both richer and poorer, in great state, or worse for wear, we’ll board the buses and head back to London, with entry directly to our after party, so the die hards (all of us) can cut loose.
Pick ups from either Hammersmith and Clapham, and drop offs at either spot, or at the after party venue (tbd, but will be sick)
Doors open for check-in. Champagne breakfast? We won’t judge you.
Buses start departing, now’s the time to mingle, to check out the outfits.
Arrive at Royal Windsor, find your space and grab something to drink (if you’ve already drank the bottle of bubbly we gave you) and eat (if you already ate the snack pack).
2:00pm Royal Prosession
By now you’re deep in the gambling (well within your means, obviously), the bubbles, the chats. Maybe you’re even considering a dance. It’s a day at the races. You know what to do.
Race begins, have you placed your bets? Are you going to end the day richer? And not just experiences richer, but richer in pound-pound-bills, y’all.
Race ends and the live entertainment begins. Take off your heels and undo your tie, this is the time when we boogie.
Buses depart Windsor, make sure you relieve yourself at exactly 7:29pm to comfortably endure the short trip back to the big smoke.
Buses arrive back in London and the after-party begins! This has been going for 12 hours now, so only the real stayers can remain competitive in this party until…
When the after-party ends and you stumble into the warm London night – if not with a fist full of winnings, with a face full of smiles.
I’m used to the Stoke experience, but this was different. A little more fancy maybe. Loved the chance to dress up and act all royal, and even though the day didn’t end up like that, it was fun while it lasted.
We got frocked up and it felt fabulous! I’m not a gambler, but I had a little flutter, lost, but had a good time all the same. Couldn’t make the afterparty, but was a huge enough day without it. Next year I’ll trooper through.
Ate my picnic box and drank the Prosecco on the bus there. Lol. Spent a bunch on more food and drinks, but that’s how these events go, and I actually won on the last race of the day and got all my money back, ticket included, and then some for even more drinks at the after party.
I’m a native Englishman living in Spain and the first time I’ve been to Royal Ascot – and the first time I’ve seen the Queen – was with Stoke Travel! Haha, that’s a bit embarrassing to admit. But the day was amazing, the people we went with will become friends for life, and I was able to be the “toff” of the group, which was mostly Aussies and Kiwis living in London. Good times, great people.
