There are many ways to travel – solo, in a couple, with friends, in a tour group, with family. Solo travel is challenging but rewarding – you don’t have the support of familiar faces, you don’t have someone to look after your bags while you pee or to share a cab fare, or to point at monuments with. Travelling independently can sometimes be intimidating for new travellers or just those who prefer a little bit of guidance and help. Organised tours can be so cliched though and make you feel like a little sheep being herded on and off buses, allowed moments for selfies with attractions and then whisked off to the next tourist-crawling ‘must-see’.

While alcohol should never become a crutch, beer really is a social lubricant. When traveling you have limited time with new people and so the process of ‘getting-to-know-you’ is sped up. Beer just helps this along. It allows people to loosen up in a new and awkward situation and let their real feelings out. It also makes people act like idiots, which means that the whole idea of presenting a certain self to the world crumbles and people can just laugh together about it the next day over hair-of-the-dog and photographic evidence from the night before.
