Every year on June 29th, thousands of travelers head to the cliffs of Haro to take part in the world’s most chaotic wine fight. Our San Vino campsite (open June 26–30) serves as your base of operations for a week of vineyards, singing, and purple-tinted madness.

The Haro Wine Fight, known locally as La Batalla de Vino de Haro, is a bucket-list phenomenon that transforms the rolling hills of Northern Spain into a sea of purple every June. This isn’t just a festival; it’s a centuries-old tradition where thousands of travelers and locals converge to douse each other in thousands of liters of red wine.
Staying with Stoke Travel puts you in the center of the action. Our more-inclusive packages are designed to take the stress out of the chaos. Between 10 am and 10 pm, our open bar serves unlimited beer, wine, and sangria, ensuring the party never stops even after the wine “ammunition” runs out.
The origins of the Wine Fight date back to a 13th-century land dispute between the town of Haro and its neighbor, Miranda de Ebro. To secure their territory, Haro’s officials were required to mark their borders with purple banners every year on San Pedro’s Day (June 29th).
According to legend, the formal marking of the boundary at the Cliffs of Bilibio eventually dissolved into a playful wine-throwing celebration. Today, the event has been declared a Festival of International Tourist Interest.
Don’t worry about the “waste”—the wine used in the battle is the surplus from the region that doesn’t meet the strict DOCa Rioja bottling standards. As it flows off the mountain, it acts as a natural fertilizer for the very vineyards that produced it. It’s an eco-friendly bender!

Why wait until the end of summer? The Haro Wine Fight kicks off the season on June 29th. It’s the perfect way to start your Spanish bender before the August crowds and the 40°C heat of Buñol hit.
🍷VINO OVER VEGGIES🍷
In Buñol, you’re covered in gazpacho. In La Rioja, you’re literally soaked in the world’s most famous red wine. It’s purple, it’s aromatic, and—let’s be honest—it’s much cooler to say you fought in a Spanish wine battle than a vegetable fight.
💃🏻AUTHENTICITY OVERLOAD💃🏻
La Tomatina is massive, but San Vino is where the locals come to play. It feels like an authentic Spanish fiesta because it is one. We’re talking about a centuries-old tradition on a hillside vineyard, not just a tourist trap.
♻️THE “ECO” EXCUSE♻️
Unlike the tomatoes, the wine we throw is the stuff that didn’t make the cut for bottling. As it flows down the Bilibio cliffs, it actually goes back into the earth to fertilize the next batch of grapes. It’s basically environmentalism, right?

Forget the boring museum tours—this is a play-by-play of the wildest, purple-tinted bender in Spain. Stoke Travel keeps things loose, but here’s how the chaos usually unfolds.
11:00 AM – Check-in & Gear Up: Arrive at our San Vino Campsite in the heart of the La Rioja wine region. Grab your wristband, find your tent, and meet the international crowd of legends you’ll be battling with.
7:00 PM – The Official Campsite Opening Party: We unleash the DJs and open the unlimited beer and sangria bar. This is your chance to prime the engine before we hit the town.
10:00 PM – Taking Over Haro: We roll into the center of Haro for an all-night street fiesta. Think massive crowds, mobile discos in Plaza de la Paz, and locals who party harder than your average frat house.
The Town has a bunch of festivities planned in the lead up to the Wine Fight – we’ll update once we have that information, but here’s an example of what they’ve had going on in the past!
7:00 PM – In the José Ruiz Extremiana Square “El Feo”, Dragoncio children’s performance
7:30 PM – 8:00 PM – Tourists and locals gather at Plaza de la Paz to participate in various contests, food tastings, and live performances.
8:30 PM onward – The music will continue to the early hours of the morning with Diskobolo (Mobile Disco)
9:00 AM -11:00 AM – Cooked brunch, paired with unlimited mimosas, is served at campsite
AFTERNOON – Bodega Crawls (Full Experience Only): We head to the Barrio de la Estación to raid world-famous wineries like Muga and CVNE. It’s a sophisticated wine tasting tour before the messy part starts.
6:30 PM – Salsa & Sangria Masterclass: Learn to move your hips like a local at our high-energy dance session. Drink sangria, learn salsa, and prepare for another night of Haro street parties.
8:30 PM – 10:00 PM – Campsite Parties!: Take advantage of the unlimited beer and sangria at camp before we head into Plaza del Paz (an easy 5 min walk away) to get amongst the festivities of the locals

MIDDAY – In the El Mazo Pediments, Tortilla (Spanish Omelette) Competition. Locals gather in the square to taste their native dishes and are judged based on their cooking abilities
8:00 PM – In the Plaza de la Paz a parade is put on through the town celebrating San Juan by the locals where food and music is rife on to enjoy
10:00 PM – In the Herradura, musical animation tour by RocKalean. RocKalean is an itinerant rock group that makes versions of rock and pop songs in Spanish, Basque and English
11:30 PM – In La Herradura, a parade is put on by charanga de la Peña. Where people come to meet, eat and celebrate San Juan
11:45 PM and onwards – In the Plaza de la Paz enjoy music from live acts
6:00 AM -7:00 AM – Dawn Patrol: We jump on the Shuttle Bus to the Cliffs of Bilibio. If you’re still awake from the night before, you’re doing it right. We’ll also provide you a quick breakfast of muffins and fruits to prepare you for the wine fight.
8:00 AM – Wine Warfare Commences: The Mayor of Haro drops the flag, and thousands of liters of red wine are unleashed. Use buckets, water pistols, and back-sprays to drench every “white” shirt in sight.
11:00 AM – The Purple Retreat: We head back to the campsite to jump in a hot shower or straight to the onsite pool and wash off the grape juice.
12:00 PM – 2:00 PM – Refuel: Recover with a late brunch back on our campsite
AFTERNOON – The Victory Bender: The open bar is flowing, and the music is loud. We spend the afternoon celebrating at the campsite with the best after-party in La Rioja. Or chill out by the pool if you’re like that.

9.30 PM – Come down and watch the iconic Toro De Fuego aka the firework bull where they ‘release a fake bull with fireworks’ throughout the crowds to celebrate local traditions.
11:00 PM – In the Plaza de la Paz, a musical concert with local and international bands and lots of people dancing. During the performance at 12am, several fake bulls will be released. Fires that will end the holidays.
9:00 AM – 11:00 AM – Final Mimosa Toast: One last round of brunch and bottomless mimosas to nurse the final hangover of the trip.
11:00 AM – Farewell and Adios: time to check-out and hit the road – we’re off to either San Fermin, our San Sebastian Surf House or our Portugal Surf Camp if you wanna join us? Or stay in Haro and pretend you’re a local winemaker until your liver recovers.

If you aren’t joining a Stoke Travel party bus from Barcelona or Madrid, there are several easy ways to reach the La Rioja region independently. We recommend using Omio to compare the best deals on flights, buses, and trains across Spain.
1. Flying into Northern Spain
The two best airports for the Wine Fight are:
✈️ Bilbao Airport (BIO): The closest major hub. From the airport, take a shuttle to the Bilbao bus station (Intermodal), where direct buses run to Haro every few hours (approx. 1 hour).
✈️ Biarritz Airport (BIQ): Located just across the French border. It’s a great option for travelers coming from elsewhere in Europe.To get to San Sebastian from Biarritz Airport:
🚂By Train: Take the French SNCF train to Hendaye, then walk to the adjacent Euskotren station and catch a train to San Sebastian (approx. 40 mins).
🚌By Coach: A direct bus runs from Biarritz Airport to Hendaye via Saint-Jean-De-Luz (approx. 1 hour).
2. Traveling from San Sebastian to Haro
Many travelers pair the San Sebastian Surf House with the Wine Fight. Final Leg: Once in San Sebastian, you can reach Haro-Donostia via a direct ALSA bus or Renfe train.
3. Traveling from Barcelona to Haro
🚂 By Train (RENFE): Grab a train from Barcelona Sants station heading towards Bilbao or Logroño. You’ll usually have to change in Zaragoza. It’s about a 4-5 hour journey—perfect for a nap or a couple of pre-game beers.
🚌 By Bus (ALSA): Regular buses run from Barcelona Nord station. It’s affordable, reliable, and gives you plenty of time to look out the window and contemplate your life choices before you turn purple.
4. Traveling from Madrid to Haro
🚂 By Train (RENFE): Head to Madrid Puerta de Atocha or Chamartín. There are direct trains and connecting routes through Miranda de Ebro (the town next door). The high-speed AVE will get you part of the way, making the trip roughly 3.5 to 4 hours.
🚌 By Bus (ALSA): Buses depart frequently from Avenida de América or the South Bus Station (Méndez Álvaro). It’s a direct shot north and usually the cheapest way to save your euros for the Stoke Open Bar.
🚗 Road Trip: If you’re driving, it’s a straight shot up the A-1. Just remember: parking in Haro during the Batalla del Vino is a nightmare, so aim to get to the Stoke campsite early to claim your spot.

I went to San Vino with Stoke Travel last year and it was the best festival I have ever been to! The Stoke campsite is within walking distance to the street parties, which go all night, and it has a pool! We partied with the locals and got an authentic Spanish Fiesta experience. The festival itself was incredible! Stoke has buses going right up to the where the Wine Fight begins and then you can spend as long as you like there. I would definitely recommend this festival and Stoke Travel to anyone.
